Goshen United Methodist: We're All About Jesus
In 1797, the Reverend Francis McCormick, a preacher from Virginia, settled near the present town of Milford, Ohio and formed the first Methodist class in the Northwest Territory. In 1803, he and Reverend Gatch formed the first class of Methodists in Goshen Township. After meeting in members' homes for several years, the first meeting house was built on John Irwin's property. John was very active in the Methodist church and his descendants are still active in the church today.
In 1832-33 land was purchased for the purpose of building a place of worship on Mulberry Street in Goshen. The church was destroyed by fire in 1846, but was speedily rebuilt. In 1859 the church again suffered disaster due to a tornado. Once again, the church was rebuilt and the building is still used as a house of worship for Goshen Church of the Nazarene.
In 1960 the church purchased 7 acres on Goshen Road and a new church was completed in 1961. The church built a parsonage on the property in 1971 and it has been used to house our pastors since that time. A major renovation was completed in 1990, providing the church with a new kitchen, additional classrooms, and a large multi-purpose room for dinners and conferences.
The physical structure of the Goshen United Methodist Church has endured many changes and challenges over the past 175 years. However, the love and spirit of the church family remains constant. Our quest to love God, love one another, and bring others to Christ is still our #1 priority.
